Dual-Layer Nanofibrous Membranes for Enhanced Forward Osmosis Water Treatment

A groundbreaking advancement in membrane-based technology, known as forward osmosis (FO), has emerged due to its low energy consumption and minimal susceptibility to membrane fouling. However, widespread adoption of FO is hindered by the scarcity of high-performance FO membranes. The ideal high-performance FO membrane should exhibit robust antifouling properties, consistent chemical characteristics, low structural parameter (S value), high water permeability, and low salt permeability. Among the emerging options, nanofiber-supported FO membranes have gained popularity. Thin-film composite (TFC) FO membranes, comprising porous substrates and ultra-thin polyamide (PA) selective layers, offer exceptional permeability and selectivity. However, a key challenge lies in minimizing the overall S

Novel Approach to Assess Microplastics in EU Drinking Water

A novel methodology developed by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) aims to facilitate compliance with the EU Drinking Water Directive by enhancing the monitoring of microplastics in tap water across the European Union. Our daily requirement of about one and a half liters of water is crucial for maintaining bodily functions. However, the presence of minute plastic particles, known as 'microplastics,' in our drinking water raises concerns about potential health implications. Despite growing awareness of their presence, uncertainties persist regarding their impact on human health, largely due to inadequate understanding of their prevalence and distribution in water supplies. To address this, European drinking water regulations offer legal frameworks for monitoring emerging pollutants on a

Sulzer Introduces Next Generation XFP Contrablock Evo Hydraulics Including High-Head Variants

Wastewater pumps operate in very challenging environments and Sulzer is constantly striving to improve the performance and reliability of its products. Submersible pumps in the sewage pumping station network, for example, are at the front line, forced to deal with increasing volumes of wipes and fibrous materials that can cause blockages. To help combat this, Sulzer’s XFP range is now fitted with the ContraBlock Evo hydraulics, including impellers that can be retrofitted to legacy pumps. The portfolio has also been extended with two-pole, high-head variants for more challenging applications. Pump design is a process of continuous evolution and Sulzer has been at the forefront of this market for decades. The XFP range is ideally suited to the wastewater sector, especially sewage pumping

The Struggle to Replace Lead Pipes in American Water Systems

Last summer, Joshua Perkins was taken aback to find utility trucks stationed outside his residence, courtesy of Memphis Light, Gas and Water. His puzzlement escalated when, attempting to draw water from his faucet, he found it dry. Concurrently, construction noises reverberated from the street, coinciding with notifications on his phone. President of his local neighborhood association, Perkins discovered the nature of the activity through a group chat: the utility had initiated a project to replace certain lead pipes in the vicinity. Remarkably, Perkins claimed never to have received any notification letters to this effect. Despite a purportedly "safe" water test from the company three years prior, the recent flurry of activity revived his apprehensions concerning lead contamination.

Saving Water Starts with You

For some people, water has never been a challenge in their day-to-day lives. This is mainly because they are living in communities where water is easily accessible. For them it’s simple – they turn on the tap and clean water just flows, every time, every day of the year. This makes it difficult for them to acknowledge the challenges experienced by people in other parts of the world when it comes to getting hold of a few drops of water – realizing the real value of water. In developing countries, people can only access water from flowing streams, many of which are sometimes contaminated, leading to water-borne diseases. The lack of quality water also endangers proper handling of human waste and sewage, resulting to stagnant, dirty water – a welcoming environment for mosquitoes and other
